What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are naturally occurring chemical compounds extracted from the flowers, leaves, wood, roots and other parts of plants.
Don't confuse essential oils with perfume or fragrance, they are not the same. Essential oils are derived directly from natural botanicals, while fragranced oils contain artificial substances and do not offer the same therapeutic benefits.
Pure essential oils are not adulterated with additives of any kind. They are, however, comprised of many naturally occurring chemicals, sometimes referred to as constituents. Essential oils are made up of a wide diversity of different molecules. Many of these constituents crossover from plant to plant. For example, the molecule 1,8-cineole can be found in the makeup of essential oils from rosemary, tea tree, eucalyptus, spike lavender and more.

Scientists are studying many of the constituents in essential oils, including limonene, α-pinene, myristicin, and linalool, for their powerful antioxidant properties. |
