Aromatherapy
& Massage

Picture

During An Aromatherapy Massage

The massage therapist will typically diffuse the essential oils in their hands for you to deeply inhale for a minute or two at the beginning of your massage. This encourages the relaxation response and can enhance the benefits of massage therapy. The essential oils may also be mixed with oil or lotion and be incorporated throughout the massage.
  • When inhaled, the active aroma compounds encourage even deeper relaxation and stress release.
  • Applied topically, some essential oils may also be warming or cooling, which can provide an extra soothing massage.
Essential oils can create a relaxing, luxurious experience that balances the mind, body, and spirit.  When combined with massage, aromatherapy can provide an additional level of relaxation and healing.  Essential oils further support the benefits of massage therapy by enabling targeted aromatic and topical relief.

Be sure to ask about including aromatherapy during your next massage therapy appointment!

"Carrier" Oils

Most essential oils require dilution in a “carrier” oil before being used topically. Because massage therapists already use oils and lotions, essential oils can easily be incorporated into a massage.
Some common carrier oils are:
  • jojoba
  • grapeseed
  • apricot kernel
  • sweet almond
  • coconut
