When Is It Not Okay To Get A Massage?

12/7/2017

Many health conditions may require gentler forms of massage therapy, or more specialized techniques and treatment plans. In many cases, your massage therapist can come up with a treatment plan that will work for you and your health situation.

A massage might sound comforting if you are feeling under the weather, but massage therapists and other clients are vulnerable to infections. Massage therapists and clients alike are asked to reschedule appointments when they are feeling unwell.
It is important for you to fully complete your Health History and keep your massage therapist up to date on your condition.  Not all types of massage are appropriate for all conditions.

Be sure to let your massage therapist know if you have:
  • Any acute injury from a recent accident such as whiplash, sprains, or other soft tissue damage.
  • Acute conditions such as flared-up psoriasis, eczema, or rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, prominent varicose veins, osteoporosis, or any other serious medical conditions.
Even some prescribed or over-the-counter medications can contraindicate receiving certain types of massage therapy.  Be sure to list any medications you are taking, and inform your therapist of any changes since your last visit.

In some situations, your massage therapist may request your physician's consent or direction.
Massage is absolutely not appropriate if:
  • You have a fever, severe cold, flu or any infectious disease.  Massage during this time may actually cause you to feel worse and may also put the massage therapist and other clients at risk.
  • Alcohol or drug intoxication.

Recovering from accident is not very easy because the joints have displaced from its original location and placing them back through massage is a great challenge. Before having massage you must seek recommendation from your doctor , if doctor allows you to have massage then go for it because they know well whether the joint is able to handle the massage pain or not.
