What is hemp extract?
Hemp extract is a concentration of all components of the hemp plant’s leaves, flowers, and stems. This extract includes cannabinoids, terpenes, plant sterols, fatty acids, flavonoids, and essential vitamins and nutrients. This liquid extract can be refined to contain only certain compounds from the plant. Is hemp seed oil the same as hemp extract or CBD oil? No. Hemp seed oil also comes from hemp and is used in many food, health, and beauty products, but it does not contain CBD and has not been found to have any medicinal value. Hemp seed oil is an extract of only the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp extract is made using the entire hemp plant and all its aerial parts, and it contains a wide range of phytocannabinoids (including CBD), terpenes, and flavonoids. What is a CBD oil tincture? “CBD Oil” typically refers to a concentrated cannabidiol extract made from industrial hemp plants (containing .3% or less THC). It can be made from a whole plant (full or broad spectrum) extract, or it can be made from concentrated and refined CBD isolate blended in a carrier oil. “Full Spectrum” Hemp Extract Sometimes full spectrum hemp extract is also referred to as “whole plant” or “full plant” extract. Full spectrum hemp extract is a concentration of all components of the hemp plant, including cannabinoids, terpenes, plant sterols, fatty acids, flavonoids, and essential oils, vitamins, and other nutrients. CBD is one of the most abundant compounds, but there are many others including cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and—if it is extracted from marijuana instead of industrial hemp— tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Most full spectrum hemp extracts are extracted from low-THC industrial hemp and only contain .3% THC, and products containing levels this low will not produce a high. “Broad Spectrum” CBD Extract Broad spectrum hemp extract is very similar to full spectrum extract except it typically has the THC molecule removed, or is made from special strains of cannabis with no THC. This is an excellent fit for people who want the benefits of CBD without the “high” and psychoactive affects of THC, or who have to take drug tests or cannot use full spectrum products for other reasons. Broad spectrum is typically made in two ways: from full spectrum hemp extract and then the THC is removed, or by taking CBD isolate and then adding the other phyto-components (except for the THC) back in. CBD “Isolate” CBD isolate is a pure, crystalline powder that contains 99% pure CBD. CBD isolate is made with a more detailed extraction process than a CBD tincture. Once the concentrated CBD extract is removed from the hemp plant, it goes through an additional process to remove all traces of plant material, waxes, and all components left behind during the initial extraction. CBD isolate no odor or taste and can be used in a wide range of products like smoothies or supplements, or mixed with other ingredients to create products such as balms, topicals, and other skin-care products. CBD Isolates vs. Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract Many people believe that full/broad spectrum is the most beneficial form of hemp extract, as it contains not only CBD but also other cannabinoids and terpenes which benefit the body through the “entourage effect”. Some people prefer CBD isolates because they feel they experience better results, and the pure isolate can be made into more potent and highly concentrated products. Isolates are also great option if you want to mix CBD into other products, such as topical lotions and massage oils, for a high potency dose of CBD without the taste or aroma of broad spectrum hemp extracts. What is the “Entourage Effect”?Hemp has over 400 naturally occurring chemical compounds, including cannabidiol (CBD) and other secondary phytocannabinoids, as well as terpenoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that many people believe work synergistically to heighten the positive effects of the cannabidiols. The “entourage effect” is idea is that the whole plant is greater than the sum of its parts as they interact with the human Endocannabinoid System (ECS). In fact, scientists studying the ECS have found in preliminary studies that these plant compounds may have a better effect on the body when they work together, rather than alone. |
