"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion."
The Power of Love
All the many kinds of love, as well as joy and compassion radiate from our heart chakra, the fourth chakra, located in the middle of our chest, at our heart's center.
The heart chakra is the bridge between the lower and higher chakras, balancing the physical world with the spiritual. The fourth chakra unifies the mind-body-spirit, bringing "wholeness" and integrity to our being.
The heart chakra is the source of unconditional love and compassion, for ourselves and for all creatures and all life everywhere. The fourth chakra reminds us that we are a part of something larger than ourselves, part of an interconnected web of life. In loving ourselves, we generate the feeling of unconditional love within us, and then we can share this feeling with others. Our heart chakra connects us with those we love, and governs our relationships and social identity.
Unconditional love is a powerful energy that sustains us through the most difficult times in our lives. Our ability to heal ourselves and others, is centered in the fourth chakra, our hearts.
Follow Your Heart
Our physical heart and blood, as well as the entire circulatory and respiratory systems, work in synchronicity with our heart chakra. Lungs, diaphragm, esophagus, thymus, breasts, ribs, upper back, shoulders, arms, and hands are all tied to this vibrant energy center. All of the "connective" tissue of the body is governed by this chakra. The predominant sense organ and sense related to the heart chakra is, in fact, skin and our sense of touch.
Listen to Your Heart Chakra
Has your heart ever skipped a beat in love, or have you ever felt that you and your love's hearts beat as one together?
Researchers at the U.C. Davis found that couples' breathing patterns and heart rates really do synchronize when they sit close to each other.
The couples participating in the study did not even need to hold hands or touch for their hearts to connect and synchronize. When they tried the same scenario with strangers, there was no synchronization of heart beat or breathing patterns.
Another study published in the journal Frontiers of Neuroscience demonstrates that choir members singing together synchronize heart rate, as well as breath.
"The synchronized beating isn’t just of musical interest," says researcher Björn Vickhoff. "The finding could inform how singing might help some people to control their breathing and heart rate more effectively. Older people, and those who are under stress, tend to have less variability in their heart rates, a sign of poorer heart health."
Balancing & Healing the Heart Chakra
Sometimes, circumstances can leave us feeling unbalanced. While there are many things influencing our energy systems that we are not able to control, there is much we can do to help bring ourselves (and each other) into a healthy balance.
Given that skin and our sense of touch are closely tied to the heart chakra, it makes sense that massage and bodywork can have an influence on this energy center.
In addition to physically opening and releasing tension and blockages in the chest, ribs, and arms, massage therapy can have an immediate and long term effect on heart health. In fact, many recent scientific studies have proven massage therapy can decrease blood pressure and heart rate, and has been shown to significantly decrease in the hormone arginine-vasopressin (a major player in regulating blood pressure and water retention). Numerous controlled studies have shown significant reductions in blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of the "stress-hormone" cortisol after just 10-15 minutes of massage!
Another major benefit of massage therapy and bodywork is the time and opportunity to re-connect with our own mind, body, and emotions. Taking the time to get in touch with ourselves, physically and emotionally, is critical to living a healthy, happy life. Re-connecting with our hearts can open us to tremendous healing.
Take a moment to get in tune with your heart, mind, and body.
Not only do essential oils smell great, but numerous studies have shown that aromatherapy can reduce anxiety in breast cancer patients and can benefit the heart.

Color & Light Therapy
Green is the color of the heart chakra, sometimes with a pink glowing center. Surround yourself with the relaxing and revitalizing color green to support and stimulate the heart chakra. Fill your home and office with green plants. Surround yourself with images of nature and greenery. Wearing green clothing and gemstones can also help support and balance your heart chakra.
Using crystals and gemstones can be a powerful way to balance, clear blockages, and bring harmony to the heart chakra. Wearing jewelry or carrying a crystal in your pocket can give you the extra support you need. Rose quartz is one of the most effective crystals for restoring the heart chakra. Other gemstones commonly used for the fourth chakra are malachite, emerald, green tourmaline, jade, peridot, and aventurine.
The element of the fourth chakra is air, so get outside and feel the sun and the breeze on your skin! "Getting the heart pumping" and surrounding yourself with the lush green of trees and grass is a powerful way to restore and revitalize the heart chakra.
Imagine a glowing, emerald green light in the center of your chest. With in that light, image a beautiful pink rose slowly opening and blossoming in your heart. Feel your heart chakra and your chest opening and expanding and filling with love so that your whole body feels overflowing with light and love. Open yourself to giving and receiving universal love and healing.

Listening to music that "uplifts your heart" is a sure way to instantly clear out and balance the fourth chakra! Music, singing, chanting, Tibetan bowls all have a powerful effect on our energy. Everything that exists has its own inherent frequency, kind of like a fingerprint. Each chakra resonates to its own frequency as well. The heart chakra resonates to the note “F”, or at a frequency around 341.3 Hz. Chanting YAM in this note will begin to balance your heart chakra.
Take moment, now, to feel the love and bring your heart chakra into balance...
